Oconee County is nestled in the foothills of the beautiful Appalachian Mountains. The county is encompassed by rivers, lakes and forests which make this part of the state one of South Carolina’s most scenic and economically stimulating regions. Located along the Interstate 85 corridor, Oconee County is considered one of the fastest growing areas in the nation. Lake Keowee is an 18,300 acre man-made lake operated by Duke Power Company. The lake is famous for its mountainous surroundings and long shadows during sunrises and sunsets. Public access is available through a variety of public boat ramps and local and state parks. “Place of the Mulberries” is the meaning of Keowee in the language of the Lower Cherokee Nation, which made the settlement site its capital. This culturally rich and historic part of the country is a wonderful place to raise a family, meet new people or retire in the comfort of a safe environment filled with tremendous community spirit and pride. During the spring, community jubilees honor the arts, crafts and music of historic South Carolina. Summer festivals include nationally recognized Revolutionary War reenactments and the award-winning All-American City July 4th Festival. When the weather cools, family farm festivals feature sheep shearing, herding, spinning and weaving demonstrations. Lastly, the winter features many historic festivals that offer glimpses into Colonial living with open-fire cookouts, goldsmith, spinning, blacksmith and musket firing demonstrations. The most popular special events in Oconee County include the South Carolina Apple Festival, Oktoberfest and the Spring Heritage Festival. In the neighboring counties of Anderson and Pickens, additional events such as the Historic Pendleton Spring Jubilee, Soirée, Heritage Day at the Hagood Mill, Pumpkin Festival and Dacusville Farm Days are also wonderful celebrations for the entire family. Overall, Seneca is a great place to call home. Its ideal location in South Carolina Upstate affords residents the finest in employment, recreation and entertainment opportunities.
